Export the melody to PDF with paper strips, print it out and cut with scissors.
Make sure to use the right paper size and set you printer scale to 100%, otherwise
the size won't match. It's better when paper strips are thick, so if you are going
to use thin office paper, we recommend you to glue two or three layers together.
Another option is to laminate paper strips with a transparent duct tape
Punch holes with a tool from the music box kit
Enjoy your favorite melody playing on a real music box!
Sure! I arrange everything by ear. I typically arrange short 4-measure-ish chunks of the song at a time, doing the chords and then the melody (or vice-versa). I usually just arpeggiate chords (staggering the notes on each beat instead of all at once). That pattern is pretty evident in most of my arrangements.
I can't imagine doing it by ear, you must be some kind of music box wizard. Just got my first music box, I hope to contribute soon! Thanks for the tip about the arpeggios, I didn't know they were considered arpeggios but I noticed that they were an important part of tunes that sounded good and helped them sound more music box-y
That's exciting, welcome to MBM! Funnily enough, I realized I am not using a ton of arpeggios in this particular tune---my other trick is to use chord tones to emphasize whatever the percussion is doing in the song since there isn't untuned percussion on a music box.

Amazing, thank you for this! Care to share what your process is for making these?
