Hi! I just got myself a 15 note music box. I'm sort of tired of holding it with my other hand while i crank it. And of course I will do some experimenting on my own, but can anyone give me some tips on how to create a housing for the mechanism that makes a nice, big sound? How can I make it as loud as possible, without a mic?
Also, I heard some problems with the gears breaking or something... I have access to a 3-d printer where I live, does anyone know the dimensions of the gears or something, in case they break? or maybe I can buy the gears to replace them?
I had a nice wooden box that holds a photo on top but just collected bits and buttons. My husband took my 15 note music mechanism, and the box to the cellar. He then cut a slit in the side of the box to set the crank in so the mechanism would lie flat on the bottom of the box and mounted it inside with tiny screws. He then cut a slit in the front and back of the box, touched the box up with a bit of stain and problem was solved. I hole the whole box against my body with the crank facing up and turn away, no slipping and nice sound. If you open the box lid and face it outward the sound is louder but it sounds fine with the lid closed also. My fingers feel a whole lot better not having to try to hold that on a table while turning the crank. Good Luck.
