This has always been a problem for me: I had to buy a new roll of music box paper which is from a different brand than my music box (both are thirty note paper though) when I ran out of the paper that came with my music box. When playing with the paper that came with my music box, everything sounds fine including the gears, but when playing with the new paper, the gears make this loud grindy sound and it's hard to wind. I've noticed that the new paper is thicker than the old paper, so that might have something to do with this problem. Is there something wrong with my gears, the paper, or something else? I really don't want to resort to getting new paper because that new roll costs $30...

Oh yeah, I also oiled the gears, but they still sound noisy when played with the new paper.
I´d recommend to play your songs a few times. Maybe it gets better, because the plastic wheels compress the paper strip a tiny bit.
Ah I see, I'll try that, thank you.
Sorry that this is so late, but still no luck, there doesn't seem like any improvement... I wish there was some way to make this paper flatter, ahh...
