I have some musical background, however, I have never composed music (apart of some riffs and chords on the guitar, and some rhythms on drums).
I have already done some research on Wikipedia and the like. However, I have not (yet) found any specific information regarding the music box and since they are multiple music boxes even on this site, it only confuses me more.
In the following, I try to summarize my questions regarding the GI30. However, answers for other music boxes are welcome as well.
My questions are: What scales are possible on the music box? ( I have read it is "mostly chromatic" which I would interpret as if it can play most of the scales ) What is the temperament of the music box? ( I assumed it is equal tempered, but I have found no information confirming this ) What is the maximal tempo in bpm, that two notes can be played consecutively ( The creator on this website marks them as red, but how does it decide? )
I'm really bad when it comes to music theory questions, but I can say that two of the same notes cannot be played one bar apart or less on a paper strip. It's not about bpm, it's about the length on the strip because of how the music box mechanism works.
I can answer the first question. All ascending and descending major scales in all keys are possible, I tried, haha. A GI30 can play every pitch between C4 and C5, which means it is capable of playing all twelve notes. Thus, we know it is capable of playing all modes of C (Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, etc.) , because it can play that chromatic scale between C4 and C5.
@Robobermann: I think I know what you mean, I will look it up.
@erin: I think I have every pitch between C5 and C6. Between C4 and C5 I am missing Cis and Dis. In fact, GI30 should have every pitch between E4 and C6. So I should have every scale, and only C-sharp major and D-sharp major scale are missing the octave (e.g. I have Cis5 but no Cis6).
For the C major scale, all the modes are available. ( I didn't know about the modes at all :) ) But not because it is chromatic between C5 and C6, but because it has two octaves of a C major scale.
I have my information from about the available notes from the Creat tool here on the website, I hope my conclusions are correct.
