check out my own punch tape editor! Since I always had problems getting the music onto these perforated tapes, I wrote an editor (The program has been around since 2017, but I have added a lot of features in the last few days). It can import MuseScore files (.mscz), offers a wide range of editing functions, allows you to preview and play your composition, and then export a print template as a PDF or SVG, which you can then use to punch holes (I explain the entire workflow on the homepage). Free to download for Win and macOS:
This little piece of software is great, and I really appreciate being able to add thirty-second notes. The advantage is that you can still arrange a piece even if the original tempo is too fast. Do you plan to add MIDI file import to your software? That could be a great improvement. In any case, thank you very much for sharing this! David
Yes, the link is in the first post. Remove the spaces from: lebostein . de / musicbox It seems like the forum is blocking every post that contains a link. And it seems there isn't an admin here anymore. From the looks of it, no one is taking care of the forum or this site anymore...
The big problem of the online editor on musicboxmaniacs is the wrong calculation of the minimum spacing between two playable notes. The user is confident that their composition is correct and can be converted into a punch card, but it still contains many unplayable notes (that can be pretty frustrating after all that hard work to create a perforated strip). For almost all of the songs I downloaded for testing purposes, my program displays some notes too close together, sometimes even in important melodic passages...
Interesting Lebostein3, I haven't found that to be a problem with MBM's editor. Notes that cannot be played on a real music box are highlighted in red. Your box should be able to play two of the same note that are spaced apart by one line.
I have been able to correspond with MBM support via email as recently as this past February. They are pretty responsive. But you're correct that I don't believe anyone is actively moderating the site nor is doing active development on it anymore.
Very excited to try out this tool. For years I have been arranging music on MusicBoxManiacs and for pieces that are too fast, using my own MIDI transformer https:// erinmusicbox.com /#/midi-visualizer to push the notes closer together. (My site has loads of problems; I haven't had time to work on it in a while)
Oh Erin! Tanks you for you link ! The “note spacing” feature for pieces that are too fast is something I’ve been looking for for a very long time, and it really deserves to be integrated into MBM. It’s a shame that you can’t export the result from your site!!
The only workaround I’ve found so far is to print my PDFs while slightly adjusting the horizontal scaling, keeping the vertical aspect unchanged.
LeBostein, do you plan to integrate this “note spacing” feature into your software someday?
"Edit / Stretch timeline" means scaling by a factor of 2 (whole song) "Edit / Compress timeline" means scaling by a factor of 0.5 (whole song)
In the latter case, a warning is displayed if the compressed note no longer fits within the specified grid. In principle, I could also add a custom scaling factor here. I would only need to change a few lines of code...
I know it’s possible to simply divide the rhythm by two and remove the duplicated notes (this function actually exists on MBM as well), but what I mean by “note scaling” is the ability to reduce the spacing between notes by a certain percentage.
In some specific cases—for example, when the tempo is 100 and there are no duplicated eighth notes—it becomes far too fast when you reduce the duration to 50. What would be ideal is to reduce the spacing between notes by 10 or 15%, for instance.
For now, I do it using Inkscape, which allows me to print the PDF while adjusting the horizontal scale.

Lebostein, you're right ! And thanks you for the update with the midi import ( your software is a great alternative to MBM)

“note spacing” What does that mean, specifically? I have at least one function that stretches or compresses the song globally by a factor of 2:
before: https://lebostein.de/temp/mb_1.jpg
after: https://lebostein.de/temp/mb_2.jpg
"Edit / Stretch timeline" means scaling by a factor of 2 (whole song)
"Edit / Compress timeline" means scaling by a factor of 0.5 (whole song)

Wonderful! Yes that is precisely the feature my tool has but your tool of course has much more functionality. I look forward to trying it out!
