most of the tunes i play on my Music Box are very slow. How do i speed it up... i can only turn the handle so fast... some of the tunes dont sound good either with a slow BPM
Move the holes closer together - you can put new vertical lines, or go half as far between holes so that all the notes are closer together. Or scale the .PDF smaller in the X direction.
I'd recommend not doing anything with a BPM of over 90-95 on a music box (BPM is listed on each tune on this site) since you'll have to spin the handle really quickly in order for it to sound like the preview. If there is space between each note, though, you usually can move the notes closer and it will be twice as easy to spin.
I agree with Erin. Just use less space between notes. I was using each vertical line like a sixteenth. When I treated them like eighths, the speed doubled, so I could crank slower and get the same effect. You CAN sneak notes in between vertical lines if you're careful, and get 16th notes.
Coming back to this thread after 4 years, I created a web app that can condense notes closer together to reduce turning speed by half if anyone is interested. https://erinmusicbox.com/midi-visualizer
Erin, I tried to use your MIDI tool, but the midi file I downloaded from this site didn't work. For reference, I was trying to speed up https://musicboxmaniacs.com/explore/melody/waltz-of-chihiro-spirited-away_4561/ Your site gave the message "Oh no! Something went wrong with parsing your MIDI file. Please try a different file."
Hi Christina, I am so sorry to hear that! I tried it myself and got the same error as you. Very strange because it looks like other songs from Music Box Maniacs are still working. I'll have to look into this, but I'll contact you if I figure out why this specific song isn't working.

Should some of the cog wheels in the engine be either smaller or bigger so that the song would speed up and not have to turn the crank faster?
