I just got a Wingostore 30-note with brass gears for Christmas a few days ago, I've been using it quite a bit, but now there's one wobbly gear that is making crunching sounds, slipping teeth, and getting stuck a lot. Is it defective? A lost cause? Should I see if I can return it for another? If they send me new gears instead, do you think that might help? Any advice would be nice, thanks!
Hi, New user here. A couple of features I would like to see that would make this tool much more useful for me: 1. Expanded View - Can the view be "shrunk" in order to see the entire 30 note field? Having to continually scroll the view is a bit of a drag and compressing the view by about 50% would eliminate this in both directions. The note "boxes" would still be large enough (on all but the lowest resolution displays) to be accurately clicked. 2. Step Playback - It would be VERY helpful to be able to analyze melodies and harmonies by stepping through the sequence one step at a time, say each press of the spacebar advances to the next chord. 3. Designated Start Position - Being able to designate where the playback starts would also be helpful from an editing standpoint, particularly on longer sequences. Having to always start at the beginning is very time consuming when editing in the middle or toward the end of the sequence. <Edit> I found the option to start at a specific position, but it only continues from there to the end of the sequence. I have a sequence with a "pick-up" measure that repeats at the end of the last measure. I'd like to start there, then return to the first full measure and then loop continuously. Once I finish the sequence and publish it, you'll see what I mean. 4."Roll" the Chord - Very helpful in editing would be the ability to stop on a chord and roll (or arpeggiate) the individual notes bottom-to-top and vice-versa. 5. Continuous Voices - If a step-time mode is implemented, I'd like to be able to choose a continuous voice, like an organ tone, in order to further analyze the harmony structure. This is not possible with a "plucked" tone that decays quickly. 6. More Time Signatures - I do a lot of "swing-time" entry and composing. For this I usually am in the time signature 12/8. It would be helpful to see the "measure" divided (and numbered) into 12 segments instead of 8. <Edit> 7. Micro Positioning - Just thought of this one: Right now the "resolution" of placing a note in this composing tool is + or - an eighth note (at 4/4). However, it is possible with careful positioning of the punch (when punching an actual strip) to effectively enter "grace" notes. The ability to do this would greatly expand the capability and versatility of the tool. Perhaps you could code it so that a right click on a particular note would bring up a menu in which you could (typically) "advance" the sounding of the note by a given percentage (of BPM?) to achieve this effect. <And another> 8. Transposing - It would be EXTREMELY helpful to be able to transpose the pitch of the notes played back to agree with "real world" tuning standards. I.e., on my 30-note mechanism, "C" sounds as "F", and all other intervals are "offset" accordingly. This makes trying to use a standard keyboard to compose and transfer to this tool essentially impossible. <Yet another> 9. Text/Notes - This would be the icing on the cake: I'd like to be able to add text (lyrics) or other performance notes on the sheet to help me keep my place in the composition process. Thanks for considering these suggestions.
I have a music box that lines up with the Grand Illusions 30 note F scale and I can't properly load files. What I did was setup the piano roll in Create as a GI 30 note F, and then I just went from top to bottom clicking on each note to get the range (imagine a long ramp downward). After that I exported it as MIDI and imported it into Sonar to see what it looked like for reference. Everything looked OK except that Create is showing notes an octave too low which is no big deal for right now. What I can't figure out is how to get that same MIDI file that I downloaded back into Create in its original form. Even if I preset the piano roll in Create for the GI 30 F scale it will import as a GI 30 note default and I lose the top notes. It also misses the timing after a while and skips beats, so to speak (ramp not smooth like original). Does any of this make sense? I'm trying to make sense of this and it's not making sense.
And I'm wondering if I should print out the Grand Illusions 30 Note version which is just plain (no text after description) or the one which says "Key of F"?
It's for my wife for Christmas. I'll probably print out from the link above and use that to punch one of the cards that came with it (might come up short, but should be okay)
So what would be cool is if a 140mm wide (20 Note) variation could be made for use to create punch rolls for a barrel organ... the online creation tool is awesome none the less
While I see suggestions that there are more than one manufacturer for 30-note music boxes, I see no evidence of that. All the photos from different suppliers seem to show exactly the same design – not even small changes that could be expected from a single manufacturer as they make slight changes over the years.
All the verifiable information I have seen seems to speak only of a music box tuned to the key of F, even though the paper strips all seem to be notated in the key of C, with the weird labelling of # notes. (For example, F# is written #F, which is confusing, since one might incorrectly assume that the # actually refers to the note before it.)
All of the comments about music boxes being different seem to be attributable to these two anomallies, and the resulting confusion.
1) Does anyone have any evidence that there are different manufacturers and not just many resellers? 2) Does anyone have any evidence that there are 30-note music boxes that are not in the key of F?
We are using the music boxes in live music performances of original music combining the music box with voice. While it is still possible sometimes to play some melodies in some adjacent keys, the existence of music boxes in other keys would enlarge our repertory possibilities.
Last 2 times when I printed 30 notes melodies, cut and punched them, and try them in the electric music box movement that is very delicate, that not play a melody if there is a mm difference, I realized that the actual size was very smaller than a 30 notes, ready to punch paper, so actually I have to punch entirely the whole melody, instead of printing, whats happening with the pdfs??
It would be nice to have a way to see, on full range mode, which notes would not play on the 30 notes musicbox. Maybe a different color for those notes. With such feature, it would be easier to adjust the notes to fit the musicbox.
