I want to move the playback head so that I can preview the section that I am composing, without having to play from the beginning. The brief instruction says that you can move the playback head by right-clicking with the mouse. When I try this (using the Ctrl key on my Mac keyboard) I briefly see a drop-down menu that starts with "Set Playback Start" but when I try to select that and release the mouse, it just inserts a new note. How can I move the playback head without making a new note?
Two days ago I got my first paper strip music box, a 30-note one. I've been playing songs in it for the past few days and it functioned perfectly, no sign of damage to the gears which some recommendation pages for buying warned me about.
But just now I made the mistake of not checking the direction of the paper strip when I pulled it into the music box, and I put it in on the flat part at the end of the strip. It made a horrible noise of the notes all tuning at once and it got stuck, I couldn't pull out the strip by cranking, and in my panic, I yanked it out. I've tried to play a strip the correct way after that, and there are no notes missing from the song but the gears now are making this awful cranking noise. I've checked the comb and the spikes and they work correctly so I'm sure it's a problem with the gears.
I'm so upset about this because I was so excited about my music box, and also I need it for a school project soon, if anyone could give any advice it would be much appreciated.
Edit: I had my father look at the box, and he said that some of the gear's teeth are skipping, and If I crank the box more it could break, problem is a paper strip is in it because I was showing him the noise it made by playing a song and midway through he said I should stop cranking it. The problems now are: 1. Getting the paper strip out without cranking the mechanism 2. Dissasemble the gears (my dad says he could do it but he's never worked with music boxes before and h'es afraid that dismounting it could break it for good)
Hello, I keep seeing music boxes like this: [suspicious link] online. They seem to have 72 teeth on the comb. But what exactly is their range? I am not a musician and spectrograms in Audacity taken from youtube videos aren't clear, but it seems like the lowest note should be C-3 or C#3 (for A-4 = 440 Hz). If so, they might be chromatic with 6 octaves range, so highest note would be B-8??? That's too crazy and practically useless, I have never seen a song going beyond B-7 for actual melodic notes (that's why most music trackers stop there).
Then there is 144-note music box... It seems that there is just two 72-note combs there, but for what? Like if they share the same notes, two combs allow maybe some kind of volume control? Or they are detuned a bit to make sound fuller?
Good day. I couldn't find an extensive music box guide, and decided to make one myself (also because my foot is inflamed and I ain't going anywhere). I'd like some people here to review it. Maybe I got my facts wrong somewhere, or more useful things can be added.

Hello, music box maniacs! New to using this website and printing off tunes to punch out. What type of paper is best used? Is standard printer paper alright or should I go for some light cardstock? Perhaps gluing two pieces of printer paper together? Not sure what will play on or even damage a k15. Thanks, best regards!
For now, notes placed in the editor snap onto the grid. However, this makes arpeggio expression extremely difficult. Arpeggios are an extremely popular technique in music boxes, and they make a piece of music wonderful. Please allow notes to be positioned freely, or to put it in DAW terms, support slip mode as well as snap mode.

My music box can't pull paper by itself, although all the gears are functioning perfectly , its the plastic round thing on top that doesnt make the paper move. How can i fix that, and can i even fix it? It's not really broken, its more that it isnt tight enough for the paper. Yes, i use special paper for the music box, its not printed paper. What can i do? i have to help it manually with my hand and its really annoying :(
I would like to output a note-by-note text description of my song in order to feed it to generative AI models like chatGPT, but I don't know if any of the formats provided would get me close. I can't seem to figure it out, am I missing something obvious?
After years of DIY music box-ing, I have collected numerous DIY boxes and blank paper strips that I'd like to give a new home. What would be a good place to make such a post? Ebay, perhaps?
