check out my own punch tape editor! Since I always had problems getting the music onto these perforated tapes, I wrote an editor (The program has been around since 2017, but I have added a lot of features in the last few days). It can import MuseScore files (.mscz), offers a wide range of editing functions, allows you to preview and play your composition, and then export a print template as a PDF or SVG, which you can then use to punch holes (I explain the entire workflow on the homepage). Free to download for Win and macOS:
What strikes me as somewhat peculiar about the entire scene is the lack of correspondence between the notes of the music box and the printing on the perforated strips in the 30-note models.
All printed blank strips with 30 tones that I have found (whether as individual strips or as a roll) start from "G" as the keynote, with the additional lower bass tones "D" (dominant) and "C" (subdominant):
However, all 30-note music box models I have (I own three: one from Teanola and two without manufacturer information) and all I've heard on YouTube play "C" as the root note with the additional lower bass notes "G" (dominant) and "F" (subdominant).

Where does this difference come from? Did someone start printing it wrong and everyone else copied it without ever hearing a corresponding music box? Or was there actually ever a 30-tone music box model with “G” as its fundamental tone?
Incidentally, the music editor on this page supports both variants: * "Grand Illusions 30" means the "G"-based version (of which only prints exist, but no music boxes) * "Grand Illusions 30 (F scale)" means the "C"-based version (that matches the music boxes, but for which there are no preprinted strips)
Hello, I create custom music box melodies. Till now I've been using simple pen to draw my melody on a paper for 30 notes music box. Do you know any place, where I can send midi and I will get paper with printed melody? Thank you for the tips! You can check example of my melodies on instagram (@no_normalnie).
I would like to transfer 3 songs to a new music box for my beloved on her birthday next month. But I know nothing about music editions. How can I convert a song to MP3 and then adapt it for a music box?
I've recently become interested in 3D printing and would like to try building my own. I've heard that stepper motors are key components for precise control. Do you have any suggestions for choosing a stepper motor? I found a website, skysmotor.co.uk, that offers a variety of stepper motors; would you recommend buying from there? Also, what other important components should I be aware of when building a 3D printer? Looking forward to your sharing and suggestions! Thank you!
My import seems ok and when I "play" it on the web site, it sounds fine. When I publish it and print the strips, you have to crank like crazy to make it sound reasonable. It is in 3/4 and is a lullaby but the poor kid might grow up before the piece is completed. Any suggestions on how I can condense the published strip so that it plays faster on the music box without a wrist sprain?
Hi everyone! I'm building a 3D printer and I plan to buy a stepper motor online (skysmotor.co.uk). Which models (e.g., NEMA 17) would you recommend for the X/Y/Z axes? Is it better to buy pre-wired cables or separate cables? Also, how can I check compatibility with Arduino/RAMPS boards? Thank you so much for your tips!
Does anyone know a way to loop the tape on a hand crank music box? I have a 30-note box and attempted to tape the 2 ends of the music tape together with clear vinyl tape (I wanted something sturdy since the music tape is so stiff), but I think the added thickness just broke the gears when the looped/taped part fed through the mechanism. Is looping simply impossible with plastic gears? Does it work with another kind of mechanism? Is there a kind of tape that will work better?
